Day 2 of the World Series of Poker Circuit Main Event at Harrah's Cherokee in Cherokee, North Carolina played down to the final 14 players on Sunday, and David Williams (pictured) leads the way heading into the final day of action. The day began with 168 hopefuls looking to claim the lion's share of a massive $1,179,000 prize pool, and of that number, 81 managed to make the money. Over the course of 10 full levels of play, the field was pared down to just 14, and Williams bagged the most chips with 2.165 million.
Williams should be comfortable playing with a big stack, as he finished Day 1A second in the counts, trailing only Aaron Plaisted. Employing a patient style and staying mostly silent throughout Day 2, Williams steadily accumulated chips without involving himself in too many major confrontations. And when he did, lady luck shined on Williams, as evidenced by one of the last hands of the evening. After calling Troy Thornton's preflop shove with , Williams was trailing badly against . The flop and turn came safely for Thornton, but the river brought the to give Williams the win while eliminating Thornton in 15th place.
Despite his chip lead, Williams faces some stiff competition if he hopes to take home a gold ring, a berth in the WSOP Circuit National Championship, and $235,804 in first place prize money. Michael "Tony" Sewell sits with 945,000 - good for ninth in chips of the 14 remaining runners - and Sewell is running hot after taking down his first Circuit ring in this stop's first event. Diana Dinser is also in contention with 1,090,000, trying to become the second woman ever to win a Circuit Main Event title, and the second consecutive woman winner after Michelle Chin accomplished the feat just last week at the Council Bluffs stop.
You can find a find a full rundown of the chip counts for the 14 remaining players by clicking on the "Reports" tab above.
Many accomplished pros weaved their way into the money before falling short, including Ralph Massey (17th), Nicholas Palma (41st), Steve Karp (52nd), and David Bach (65th).
