Local pro snags first WSOP Circuit ring, more than $75k in cash
On Friday afternoon, Dominique Mosley won his first WSOP Circuit ring at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek. Mosley took down the $3,250 High Roller to collect the top prize of $75,480.
Mosley, 31, is a full-time poker player originally from the Piedmont of North Carolina. He now makes his home in nearby Plantation, where he takes full advantage of the thriving South Florida poker scene. He mostly plays PLO cash games; “Pot-limit Omaha specialist, I’d say.”
He knows his way around two-card games, too, though. Mosley’s career record now boasts more than $500,000 in tournament earnings, with the majority of that coming in hold’em.
The Coco High Roller ended up with 74 entries, a generous mix of world-class players, traveling grinders, and local part-timers. Day 1 ended with just nine of them remaining.
The finalists returned Friday on the direct money bubble, with only eight slated to earn a payout. Mosley was third in chips entering Day 2, sitting behind satellite winner Maurice Costigan and five-time ring winner Martin Ryan.
Costigan fell in seventh place, though, and Ryan in fourth. It was during four-handed play that the pivotal hand played out, a battle of the blinds between Mosley and Mike Dwyer.
Mosley defended a raise with jack-eight and flopped top pair on a jack-high board. Dwyer continued with a post-flop bet, and Mosley explained his thought process thereafter.
“It was a tough spot,” he said. “I raised planning to get it in on the flop.”
Dwyer moved all in, though, which put Mosely to the test.
“When he shoved, I just felt like he had a better hand, but…” he trailed off. “There was a flush draw and a straight draw on board, and I had top pair. Just decided to go with it. I didn’t have to be right that often.”
He wasn’t right this time. Dwyer turned over pockets kings to put himself two cards from an enormous knockout. Mosley went runner-runner to make a jack-high straight, though, scooping the pot to soar into the chip lead. He did not relinquish it thereafter.
Around 6 p.m., he found himself heads-up against Matt Stout for the title. The battle was short, and it ended in a preflop confrontation. Mosley’s ace-king held against ace-jack to seal the victory.
The result is the second-largest on Mosley’s live tournament record.
